The study used a qualitative method. It presents common challenges in teaching reading in general. These were their sentiments on the challenges of teaching reading: inadequate training, big class size, limited reading materials, inadequate parents’ involvement, and inadequate teachers’ knowledge. Teachers shared the following insights: difficulty in pronunciation, professional training of teachers, learners have inadequate phonemic awareness, and use of scaffolding.
